Old Testament Survey

Dear Parents:
A long time ago, before I was a pastor, a friend gave me a note that had the words “Philippians 1:3” written by his signature. I must confess, I had to look up that Scripture. There I saw the words of the Apostle Paul; “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.” I was so touched that I committed those words to memory.

Many of us think that we go though life alone, that no one really cares about us and certainly no one understands us. Often times, this is how our children feel as they seek to balance what the world teaches them is right and acceptable with what their parents have taught them. It must certainly be a difficult time to be a teenager, given the mixed messages our youth have from the media, peers, leaders, and role models.

As we begin this semester in Bible, I want you to know that I am committed to teaching your child and helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the person of Jesus Christ. It is my hope that they will begin or strengthen their Biblical and Christian world-view.

In Old Testament Survey our class will be studying the Old Testament of the Bible. We’ll explore how the Canon came into being, the history surrounding the writers of the Bible, and the theology that shaped their world views. We’ll examine the formation of the faith and it’s relevance in the world today and what difference Christian can make in modernity.

Our class’ goal is to: be to familiarize the students with the history and geography of the Old Testament. See the progress of redemption in the Old Testament. Critique the approaches to the Old Testament made by modern scholarship. See the way in which Christ is portrayed in the Old Testament, and see the importance of the Old Testament in the life of the believer.

Again, I am excited to be teaching your child this semester. I believe we will have a wonderful school year, growing together in learning and in faith.
